Talking Points

  • Click here for suggestions and talking points for your letter to the editor.
  • Make your main point in the first sentence because a letter-to-the-editor is not a thesis or an in-depth speech.
  • Keep your letter between 200 to 400 words maximum. Shorter is better.
  • It is easier and more efficient to submit your letter to your local newspaper through their website.   If submitting your letter electronically isn't an option, then include your name, address, and phone number in the hardcopy you send to the newspaper. Most publications will call to verify authorship, which is a good thing.
  • The subject matter of your letter should be on a current event or topic of discussion. It is also helpful if the letter is in response to a story recently published in the newspaper.
  • Read your letter aloud and proof for spelling and grammatical errors. If your letter sounds confusing to you when spoken, then potential readers will be confused as well.
  • Keep trying.  Newspapers can't print every single letter that they receive and usually have a rule on how often they will publish a letter from a frequent contributor.
