SUPPORTS CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO PROTECT MAJOR MOVES MONEY
Evansville, IN -- October
16, 2006 -- Richard Mourdock, Republican candidate for State Treasurer,
announced his support today for a newly-proposed State Constitutional
amendment guaranteeing that the Next Generation Trust money is
dedicated solely to fund future transportation projects.
"I believe this amendment is the key to ensuring these funds
will always be put to their intended use," said Mourdock.
The State Treasurer's office is in charge of overseeing and investing
the Trust Fund for the benefit of the state.
The Next Generation Trust is a $500 million fund established
by the legislature as part of the Major Moves initiative. Current
law allows the state to take interest from the fund every five
years and deposit it into the Major Moves construction fund. The
proposed amendment would require the General Assembly to use all
such money for road and transportation projects only and could
not be changed by statute.
"Experience has shown that unscrupulous politicians will
often raid dedicated funds like this one to pay for their pet
projects. This amendment is necessary to protect this money and
ensure that it is used as intended-to fund our transportation
infrastructure today and well into the future," said Mourdock.
Mourdock, 55, is a businessman and former County Commissioner
from Evansville.
